Barzan Mozafari is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His work spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, data systems, and systems optimization, with a long-running focus on systems that learn from workloads, optimize their own behavior, and deliver reliable and predictable outcomes.
His research has produced open-source systems including BlinkDB, DBSeer, VerdictDB, and CliffGuard; contributed transaction-scheduling techniques adopted by MySQL and MariaDB; and helped seed technologies commercialized through SnappyData and Keebo.
Before joining Michigan, he was a postdoctoral associate at MIT CSAIL and earned his PhD in Computer Science from UCLA. His work has received an NSF CAREER Award, best-paper awards at ACM SIGMOD and EuroSys, and the EuroSys Test-of-Time Award. His current interests include reliable AI systems, AI-assisted query optimization, and autonomous cloud data infrastructure.
